usually 60′s and 70′s era vehicles with V-8′s were considered muscle cars. combine that with high horsepower ratings (for that era) and you have competing companies like ford, dodge, and chevy trying to squeeze every last horse from their V-8′s. then it got into weight savings for the Trans Am circuit. you’ll see radio deletion, no air conditioning, performance suspension. remember the 10 ft tall wing on the datona? yup, muscle car. nowadays you have vehicles that meet strict emissions standards and every bell and whislte electronic gizmo you can think of…..nope, not a muscle car.
Vehicle History
A muscle car is a simply styled brut force car.
Pretty much BIG V8 and not much else.

A BIG engine and a simple, straight cut shell.
Oh and the noise. A loud Grunt that sends shivers down car lovers spines.

Usually the term refers to a group of cars built in the 60s and 70s (although there a newer ones too)
An intermediate sized car (usually) with a big engine. (Usually) built between the years of 1964 and 1972 (or up to 1974 depending on whom you are asking)
It is argued that the 1964 Pontiac GTO was the first muscle car. Pontiac took the midsized Tempest/Lemans body style and dropped the “big car” (ie catalina, grand prix. bonneville) 389 engine in it.
Thus resulting in a midsized car that had big car performance.
Now there were others that had done this in the late 50′s/early 60′s
(ie 1957 Rambler rebel fastest stock american sedan at that time and the 1962 dodge/plymouth but the GTO was the one that had set the sales records
