depending on how tall you are any 60′s novas or chevelles are nice starters. If you want to be really different look for a studebaker hawk, there are still many around at lower prices than the pony cars.

I also agree with Honda. They are very VERY reliable and they pretty much last a life time as long as you take care of it. Toyota is also pretty reliable too so that’s god as well.

Admirable goal but you need to ask yourself some questions first.

Restoring pre 1970 car can be a big investment in time and money. Since this is still America parts for the most part will be available but the rarer the vehicle the more difficult the restoration. JC Whitney is a good source for all kinds of parts especially VW.

If you are looking for a car that will also be your main source of transportation then you may want to re-consider in favor of a vehicle a little newer.

A friend of mine just completed a 1969 mustang coupe from the frame up; it was a father son project that took more than 2 years to complete and $20,000. He is a first class motorhead and did everything but the paint which by the way was over $2000 by itself. It is a show winner but it took a lot of work.

If you are good with your hands and have taken more than a few courses in automotive mechanics in school you may be up to the task. If not I would take some classes first and see if you like doing this kind of stuff before you get into it to deep. If you haven’t rebuilt a lawnmower yet a car is not the best place to start.

Unless you have deep pockets another thing to consider is insurance most guys your age want to restore the old muscle cars like cameros, mustangs, corvettes (my favorite), barracuda’s etc. In the hands of a 16 year old insurance companies will rake you over the coals and you will also have to buy classic car insurance if you want to protect your investment and that can be pretty pricey.

One way you may be able to save a little money on the insurance and the original price of the car is restore a car that often overlooked by restorers and thusly is not in high demand, they are cool cars but you may be able buy one at a much lower up front cost. I am referring to the old stock cars such as the 1964 Ford Galaxy (convertible of course), the 1962 Chevy Impala SS also in the convertible or the 1967 Dodge Coronet

I know you will find this hard to believe but these cars in their day were real chick magnets.
